Bear Lake Overlook
For prints: www.ThomasSchoeller.Photography
This is a rare scene from high up, overlooking scenic Bear Lake at sunrise. There is no hiking trail that takes you to it, and the location is not marked on any maps. It's one of those "cross your fingers and just keep moving" ordeals that us serious nature photographers seem to live for. The hike in began at civil twilight from the trail that circles Bear Lake. Then intersecting another trail that heads uphill at a rapid pace until you think your at the right altitude. At this point, your either all in or ya give up! The sky begins to lighten and your pulse races. Your off trail, climbing over boulders the size of Buicks and fallen trees. You realize it's not going to happen, and I rather gouge my eyes out than miss this shot! You push on, and then you come to a slight clearing and you found the secret perch! Long's Peak is bathed in alpenglow light, and the serrated edge formation just right of Long's is the "Keyboards of the Wind".
